Book the check before the departure deadline
A check on the last afternoon before travel leaves little room for parts, follow-up or a changed plan. Give the facility your departure date, planned distance, passenger and cargo load, towing plans and any symptoms. Ask for an inspection appropriate to the vehicle and trip, with a clear report of findings.
Review scheduled maintenance and unresolved repairs first. A travel inspection does not replace either. Ask the shop which issues need to be resolved before the trip and which require monitoring or further testing. If the answer is unclear, get clarification before treating the car as ready.
Use a two-column readiness list
| Topic | Your answer or action |
|---|---|
| Maintenance due during the trip | ________ |
| Open findings / warning messages | ________ |
| Tires, pressure and spare or repair-kit limits | ________ |
| Lights, wipers, cooling and cabin comfort | ________ |
| Passenger, luggage and towing requirements | ________ |
| Fuel or charging stops and alternatives | ________ |
| Roadside assistance and emergency supplies | ________ |
Check the vehicle’s limits
Use the placard and manual for loading and tire-pressure requirements. Include passengers and luggage when planning capacity, and follow the manufacturer’s guidance for towing or roof loads. NHTSA’s summer-driving guidance covers tires, fluid levels, lights and cooling systems as part of trip preparation. Have concerns assessed rather than adding products just because a trip is approaching.
Look for open recalls through NHTSA’s official recall tool. Enter identifying information on that official service, not in our directory’s contact form. If a recall applies, ask the manufacturer or authorized dealer about the remedy and scheduling.
Keep the handoff practical
Save roadside-assistance details and your repair warranty information offline. Note who to contact if recently completed work needs attention away from home. Carry the charging cables, vehicle-specific tools and emergency supplies recommended for your situation, and know their limitations.
Before driving away
Confirm that required work was completed, collect the invoice and ask about any follow-up instructions. Plan rest stops and review the route and weather. If the vehicle develops a new warning or handling concern, consult the manual and seek help; completion of this checklist is not a guarantee against breakdowns.
For colder conditions, pair this page with the winter-preparation checklist.
